DESCRIPTION:The acquisition of innovation by public administrations does not only improve the services offered to citizens\, but also provides business opportunities to local entrepreneurs.However\, small companies face overcoming challenges trying to access the public procurement market. Several barriers make it difficult for them to participate in and win tenders. Easier access to public procurement markets can help start-ups and SMEs find new opportunities and grow. \nWith the Adra-e project\, we are hosting a workshop addressing the main challenges that AI\, Data and Robotics small companies face in procurement processes. DESCRIPTION:About OASC Knowledge Exchange \nKnowledge exchange events are aimed at all members of the OASC community. They provide a peer-to-peer learning opportunity by exchanging successful use cases and best practices on various relevant digitisation topics. \nThe events are moderated online roundtable discussions that bring together practitioners across our entire network to share their experiences on specific digitisation topics. They also offer opportunities to ask questions and obtain advice to help you on your journey. \nWhether you are a thought leader and front-runner or just curious about how to put things into practice in your community\, the OASC knowledge exchange allows you to share your knowledge with others\, obtain feedback or learn from your peers. \nAbout the eventOur second knowledge exchange will focus on open data value creation. \nThe sharing and use of open data have become integral to a city’s data strategy over the past decade. Driven initially by regulatory compliance to open up certain data sets\, cities are increasingly operating open data platforms where they are curating and making a growing number of data sets available related to their municipalities. Data may come from internal data sources and public sector partners such as local transportation service providers\, emergency services and law enforcement. \nWhile the availability of open data generally increases\, the same cannot be said for its utility. Some data sets are more often used or valuable than others. This can be due to different reasons\, such as the level of interest of internal and external stakeholders in particular data or the value potential of such data to contribute to novel insights or services in response to market needs. It can also be down to data quality and how regularly up-to-date data is made available. Publishing data on its own is often not sufficient but requires a city to employ suitable engagement strategies to promote the use of such data. \nThis session will look at practical examples from three cities in our OASC network –  namely Aarhus (Denmark)\, Ghent (Belgium) and Södertälje (Sweden) – which have significant experiences creating a thriving open data ecosystem. The cities will discuss case studies and strategies for successfully leveraging data to create value for their communities. Questions to be explored include the following:  \n\nWhat are the vital data sets/sources and high-value applications?\n\n \n\nWhich ones are likely replicable across cities elsewhere or relatively unique to a city/region?\n\n\n \n\nWhat are lessons learnt about how to engage an ecosystem of third parties to create value or encourage third parties to contribute data to benefit the city?\n\n\n \n\nWhat are the failures and pitfalls when working with open data? SUMMARY:Natural Language Processing & Data Visualisation: Enhancing Citizen Participation – 11 December 2024
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the fundamentals of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and data visualisation. We will focus on extracting insights from large-scale surveys that use free-form answers in part of their questions (answer boxes where you can type in anything). Participants will learn how to perform basic NLP tasks (like sentimental analysis of text) and data visualisation of text responses and survey answers. \nAll the tools used during these workshops are available for free to EU public administrations through the BDTI platform. You can learn how to apply for BDTI here. \nThe data we will use consists of responses from the city of Vantaa’s annual participation surveys conducted in 2020\, 2021 and 2022. These surveys try to measure the satisfaction\, involvement and influence of citizens in local governance (among other things). You will learn how to use tools available on the BDTI platform to extract and visualise some insights from these responses. \nWhat You’ll Get from This Workshop: \n\nAn understanding of using NLP in translating texts and analysing sentences.\nHands-on experience in analysing survey responses in bulk.\nSkills in managing data storage and processing using Apache Superset\, MongoDB and Jupyter Notebooks.\nA foundational understanding of data visualisation techniques and tools. \n\nWho Should Join?  \nThis workshop is ideal for professionals in market research\, social sciences\, public policy\, and data analysis\, as well as anyone interested in extracting insights from surveys using data visualisation and natural language processing (NLP). They are connected to their real-world counterparts and the environment they operate in through IoT devices\, sensors\, and other data sources.  \nDigital twins are becoming a promising tool for improving local authority and city decision-making. Using 3D visualisations of their towns and simulations based on real-world data\, city planners\, policymakers\, and decision-makers can explore different actions and possible outcomes. Based on the derived evidence\, better solutions can then be implemented. Digital twins also provide excellent communication tools towards citizens\, making policy decisions more tangible and easy to understand. \nThe potential use cases for digital twins in cities are diverse and inspiring. They can range from optimising traffic management and mobility services to reducing energy and resource consumption across cities. By offering insights to improve urban planning\, sustainability\, and resilience\, digital twins can significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of city operations. \nVarious members of our OASC network have started exploring the benefits of digital twin technologies in their respective communities. As they experimented with initial use cases\, these pioneers had to overcome many organisational and technical challenges and overinflated market expectations. The OASC team has also been involved in various local digital twin initiatives and has accumulated valuable learnings. \nWe are proud to have an exciting panel of digital twin practitioners to set the stage for the roundtable conversation. We will first learn about four different case studies of urban digital twins and explore the benefits they have enabled\, the challenges that must be overcome\, and the failures and lessons learned along the way. DESCRIPTION:The SPACE4Cities project organises a webinar about the potential and benefits of space-based technologies for cities\, communities and regions. \nThis is the first edition of a webinar series organised by the EU project SPACE4Cities. The goal of these webinar series is to increase the awareness about the potential of space technologies for cities\, communities and regions in Europe\, provide information on opportunities that space-based technologies could offer them and explore successful use cases where such technologies are applied to solve cities’ challenges.  \nThe first session will be of introductory nature and set the scene for subsequent deep dives into space technologies for specific challenge areas. The webinar will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the webinar. See full agenda below. People of all backgrounds\, ages and interests are welcome. \nEvent details \nEurope has made significant investments into space technologies for navigation and positioning (e.g Galileo) or for earth observation (Copernicus). These systems are readily accessible through the EU Agency for Space Programme (EUSPA) and provide rich sources of data and services that conveniently cover large geographic areas across Europe.  \nData observed by space technologies can conveniently augment existing geo-spatial data sets to improve decision making and deliver new insights that have not been available before or are difficult to obtain at scale. Services enabled by enhanced navigation and positioning capabilities can improve how fleets and public services can be coordinated in different situations or how assets and logistical processes can be managed in urban and rural areas. \nWhile cities and communities are used to working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)\, their use of space technologies so far has been rather limited. This is partially due to a lack of understanding what space technologies can offer to them together with recent innovations that are emerging from the use of these. \nAs a result\, there are many missed opportunities for cities to take advantage of these capabilities to solve difficult challenges they are currently facing be it urban space management and mobility\, disaster response\, better use of constraint resources or net-zero transition. SUMMARY:The emerging Common European Energy Data Space - state of play and next steps\, 11 March 2024
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the creation of a Common European Data Space for Energy (CEEDS). \nThe European Data Strategy recognises the importance of data in the modern economy\, including in the energy sector\, where new players bring valuable data assets. Data is at the center of the power grid. It is exchanged between a large quantity of different software systems which enables utilities to properly plan\, operate\, and maintain their grid with a digitalised model of the physical world. \nThe Data Strategy and the EU Action plan on digitalising the energy system announced the creation of a Common European data space for Energy (CEEDS). The Commission will support the deployment of the energy data space through the DIGITAL Work Programme 2023-2024\, by considering the results of six already ongoing energy data space projects supported via Horizon Europe – five Innovation Action projects (DATA CELLAR; EDDIE;  Enershare; Omega-X; SYNERGIES) and one Coordination and Support Action (Int:net). These initiatives are focused on developing\, validating\, and demonstrating solutions for a Common European Energy Data Space that enables access to and use of energy-related data. Striking the right balance between general rules and sector-specific rules is crucial for successful implementation. \nThis data space will broaden access to data needed to develop innovative energy services that will help to balance and optimise the electricity grids and improve the energy efficiency of the built environment. It will play a key role in increasing the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources and thus advancing towards the goals set by the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the RePowerEU plan. The energy data space will be closely linked to other sector-specific data spaces (e.g. mobility and smart communities) and will thus enable actors from various sectors such as building automation and electro-mobility to actively participate in the energy market\, deliver energy services\, promote sector integration (the linking of various energy carriers – electricity\, heat\, cold\, gas\, solid and liquid fuels – with each other) and facilitate electrification of the end-uses such as heating/cooling and transport. This will allow them to contribute to the efficient use of energy\, boost the use of renewables\, and support the integration\, collaboration and information exchange between different sectors as well as create new business opportunities. \nThis workshop will explore the policy background of the work on the Common European Energy Data Space\, the preparatory work done so far within Horizon Europe with special focus on the blueprint for the energy data space developed by the preparatory actions and the upcoming actions such as the recently published deployment action under the DIGITAL Europe programme. The target audience is stakeholders from the energy\, digital and related sectors involved in the data management\, who have interest to contribute to the successful deployment of the Common Energy Data Spaces.
