DESCRIPTION:The SPACE4Cities project organises a webinar about the potential and benefits of space-based technologies for cities\, communities and regions. \nThis is the first edition of a webinar series organised by the EU project SPACE4Cities. The goal of these webinar series is to increase the awareness about the potential of space technologies for cities\, communities and regions in Europe\, provide information on opportunities that space-based technologies could offer them and explore successful use cases where such technologies are applied to solve cities’ challenges.  \nThe first session will be of introductory nature and set the scene for subsequent deep dives into space technologies for specific challenge areas. The webinar will be recorded and made available to registered participants after the webinar. See full agenda below. People of all backgrounds\, ages and interests are welcome. \nEvent details \nEurope has made significant investments into space technologies for navigation and positioning (e.g Galileo) or for earth observation (Copernicus). These systems are readily accessible through the EU Agency for Space Programme (EUSPA) and provide rich sources of data and services that conveniently cover large geographic areas across Europe.  \nData observed by space technologies can conveniently augment existing geo-spatial data sets to improve decision making and deliver new insights that have not been available before or are difficult to obtain at scale. Services enabled by enhanced navigation and positioning capabilities can improve how fleets and public services can be coordinated in different situations or how assets and logistical processes can be managed in urban and rural areas. \nWhile cities and communities are used to working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)\, their use of space technologies so far has been rather limited. This is partially due to a lack of understanding what space technologies can offer to them together with recent innovations that are emerging from the use of these. \nAs a result\, there are many missed opportunities for cities to take advantage of these capabilities to solve difficult challenges they are currently facing be it urban space management and mobility\, disaster response\, better use of constraint resources or net-zero transition. SUMMARY:The emerging Common European Energy Data Space - state of play and next steps\, 11 March 2024
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the creation of a Common European Data Space for Energy (CEEDS). \nThe European Data Strategy recognises the importance of data in the modern economy\, including in the energy sector\, where new players bring valuable data assets. Data is at the center of the power grid. It is exchanged between a large quantity of different software systems which enables utilities to properly plan\, operate\, and maintain their grid with a digitalised model of the physical world. \nThe Data Strategy and the EU Action plan on digitalising the energy system announced the creation of a Common European data space for Energy (CEEDS). The Commission will support the deployment of the energy data space through the DIGITAL Work Programme 2023-2024\, by considering the results of six already ongoing energy data space projects supported via Horizon Europe – five Innovation Action projects (DATA CELLAR; EDDIE;  Enershare; Omega-X; SYNERGIES) and one Coordination and Support Action (Int:net). These initiatives are focused on developing\, validating\, and demonstrating solutions for a Common European Energy Data Space that enables access to and use of energy-related data. Striking the right balance between general rules and sector-specific rules is crucial for successful implementation. \nThis data space will broaden access to data needed to develop innovative energy services that will help to balance and optimise the electricity grids and improve the energy efficiency of the built environment. It will play a key role in increasing the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources and thus advancing towards the goals set by the ‘Fit for 55’ package and the RePowerEU plan. The energy data space will be closely linked to other sector-specific data spaces (e.g. mobility and smart communities) and will thus enable actors from various sectors such as building automation and electro-mobility to actively participate in the energy market\, deliver energy services\, promote sector integration (the linking of various energy carriers – electricity\, heat\, cold\, gas\, solid and liquid fuels – with each other) and facilitate electrification of the end-uses such as heating/cooling and transport. This will allow them to contribute to the efficient use of energy\, boost the use of renewables\, and support the integration\, collaboration and information exchange between different sectors as well as create new business opportunities. \nThis workshop will explore the policy background of the work on the Common European Energy Data Space\, the preparatory work done so far within Horizon Europe with special focus on the blueprint for the energy data space developed by the preparatory actions and the upcoming actions such as the recently published deployment action under the DIGITAL Europe programme. The target audience is stakeholders from the energy\, digital and related sectors involved in the data management\, who have interest to contribute to the successful deployment of the Common Energy Data Spaces. DESCRIPTION:In other fields\, such as health\, it is quite common to not only design digital behavioural interventions and nudges (e.g. motivational strategies)\, but to also combine them with information about the relevant context of a person to increase effectiveness. The basic idea behind this is that a person’s decisions and behaviour are also very dependent on the current context. By considering situational variables\, we get a more realistic picture of a person’s current context\, and in turn\, the behavioural interventions and nudges have a greater chance of being effective. Within this webinar\, we show how situational aspects relevant for mobility behaviour can be digitally represented and integrated in a Geographical Information System (GIS) to be further used for “situation-aware nudges”. Moreover\, we will show how the collected data can also be used to feed it into multiple products\, such as a data dashboard that displays multiple indicators for sustainable mobility in a visual\, focused format. \n			\n				REGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:When it comes to promoting sustainable mobility\, local decision-makers (e.g. city representatives\, transport planners and providers) have the choice between two options: “Hard measures”\, like introducing new policies\, infrastructure and bans\, on their own are not always effective and cannot be implemented in every situation. Therefore\, “soft measures”\, behavioural interventions or “nudges” that operate without restrictions or bans\, have risen to prominence as a viable complement to policy measures and to support mobility infrastructure usage. In this webinar\, we are talking about soft measures in the form of digital tools that can help in changing mobility behaviour\, like smartphone apps. You surely have encountered this concept before – are you wearing a smartwatch right now or do you have a smartphone app that helps you with physical activity? Then you have a first understanding of digitally enabled behaviour change! We can transfer this idea to mobility. DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will focus on the importance of sustainable mobility within cities: In a first step\, we will briefly dive into the sustainability discourse and connect it with mobility. We will learn about the tension field between negative ecological effects\, economic prosperity and societal participation. A key for a systemic understanding for sustainable mobility is the spatial reference. Mobility can be defined as the opportunity and capability to move in space. Following this definition\, people’s mobility is ultimately dependent on distance\, accessibility\, connectivity\, and the design of the streetscape. The latter is particularly due to the fact that the perception of the built and natural environment influences mobility decisions. DESCRIPTION:AIOTI Signature Event 2023\, 10 October 2023\nComputing Continuum allows the exploitation of hybrid IoT-Edge-Cloud infrastructures with great flexibility while guaranteeing high-performance. Using Edge Intelligence (EI) enables executing computation tasks as close as possible to the data/event sources\, to enable complex yet time-sensitive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) over resource-constrained IoT devices. Such a transition of AI algorithms and models from the Cloud to the peripheral ecosystem and vice versa makes the EI beneficial for the whole spectrum of domains which are today limited by the conventional “sense-and-forward” approach typical of Cloud-based architectures. \nWe will explore how IoT and Edge Computing business driven scenarios and use cases can support these objectives and challenges\, in particular how to deal with current energy crisis\, CO2 reduction\, support circular economy and digital product passport\, impact on manufacturing and data spaces and measuring climate impact\, examine real-world use cases and international deployment of IoT\, Edge and Web 3.0 as complimentary solutions\, provide insights into where the Cloud-Edge Continuum ecosystem is going to struggle in the near future related to digital skills from policy\, research/academia and industry perspective. Examples will be presented of how I+D is challenged with Advanced Digital Skills shortage\, together with what are our current options to act today and secure a competitive European Cloud-Edge industry tomorrow and discuss what is next frontier in the computing continuum and how AIOTI can best contribute to overcome identified challenges\, having in mind key European policies and experience from other regions. \nWe will also present AIOTI initiated and led Web3 Accelerator demonstrate practical WEB3 implementations while enabling public and private user engagement and regulatory sandboxes and give for the first time AIOTI Award as recognition for exceptional achievements of our community. \nRegister here

Living-in.EU signatories as well as public representatives of cities\, regions\, and national authorities are welcome to join the meeting. \nAbout \nAccording to the 2030 Policy Programme “Path to the Digital Decade”\, multi-country projects involving several Member States\, could allow for large-scale interventions in areas necessary for the achievement of digital targets\, notably by pooling resources from the Union\, Member States and where appropriate private sources. For this reason\, the European Commission aims at playing a central role in accelerating the deployment of multi-country projects via a new implementation mechanism\, the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDICs). \nEDICs will be established in various digital areas. DESCRIPTION:FARI Conference: Local & Sustainable AI\, Data\, and Robotics\, 11-12 September 2023\n\n\nAbout the event \n\nThe world becomes more urbanized. Over 56% of the world population now lives in cities\, and this number can go as high as 97% in Belgium. In parallel\, technology plays an increasingly important role in these environments. Specifically: Artificial intelligence\, Data\, and Robotics have become an integral part of living in cities. We may not always be aware of their presence\, but they are playing a critical role in our daily commutes\, government services\, local stores\, or in the public space. \nConcepts such as “smart cities” have emerged and reflect the continuing desire of cities to implement these technologies on a large scale to address local challenges – one of which is\, of course\, becoming even more sustainable. AI and data are now being actively used in a variety of areas\, from energy sharing to biodiversity monitoring. Despite these hopes\, growing concerns have emerged about the overall inhibiting impact of these technologies on sustainability. In addition\, ethical and legal concerns have emerged\, to the point where cities enact local responsible use principles\, also insisting on greater citizen inclusion. \nThis conference will investigate if and how AI\, Data\, and Robotics\, can become local and are truly sustainable for cities. \n\nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Workshop on: What should a Local Digital Twin (LDT) toolbox look like?\, 12 July\, 14-16 CET\n  \n  \nWe are happy to invite you to participate in the virtual workshop on: What should a Local Digital Twin (LDT) toolbox look like? The workshop will take place via ZOOM\, on July 12 th \, 14:00-16:00 CET. \nThis interim workshop is integrated in the Digital Europe Program (DEP) project entitled “Co-design of the Local Digital Twins (LDT) toolbox technical specifications for Advancing the transformation of Smart Communities”. \nThe main objective is to gather the feedback from the most relevant stakeholders part of the Smart cities and communities (SCC) ecosystem on the composition of the LDT toolbox\, as well as its sustainability over time as an evolving toolbox\, and the steps towards its deployment. The views collected will contribute to refining the approach toward the final delivery of the project in August. \nFor this reason\, while this workshop targets mostly cities and communities\, the wider LDT ecosystem is also welcome to join the discussion\, namely LDT technology providers and developers; Standardisation bodies; Smart city and communities networks; and participants in relevant DEP projects (e.g.\, DS4SCC). \nThe project is managed by unit CNECT.C.3 – Technologies for Smart Communities\, and it is led by Deloitte\, together with Capgemini\, OASC\, Intellera\, Technopolis Group\, IMEC\, TNO and DTU. DESCRIPTION:Re-using public sector data with the Big Data Testing Infrastructure (BDTI)\, 4 July\, 10-11 CET\n  \nFunded under the Digital Europe Programme\, the BDTI aims to foster the re-use of public sector data and information\, by offering European public administrations the opportunity to test and experiment with a wide range of ready-to-use and source tools. The BDTI is open to all local\, regional\, and national European public administrations which\, by participating in the BDTI\, can have the opportunity to experiment with open-source technologies\, free of charge\, for a pilot period of six months. \nLearn more about the BDTI and apply now for the BDTI!  \nIn collaboration with the BDTI team\, Living-in.EU is organising an info session open to all Living-in.EU signatories to present the BDTI initiative and how it can support public administration in re-using their public sector data. \nThe online event is taking place on July 4\, 2023\, at 10:00 -11:00. Registration is now open here! \nWhich services are offered by the BDTI?   \nThe BDTI offers a wide range of ready-to-use and open-source services in various categories: databases\, data lakes solutions to store large amounts of data of both structured and raw unstructured data\, development environments to perform data analytics activities on data that comes from external sources\, advanced processing tools and visualisation applications. \nHow to apply for the BDTI?   \nAny European public administration can request a free-of-charge pilot project on the BDTI test infrastructure\, by filling in an online form.
