SUMMARY:The Role of Positive Energy Districts in City Transformation – Online\, 10-11 June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cities around the world are taking their responsibilities to tackle the climate crisis seriously. Increasingly they are following a district-focused approach to enable solutions to be tailored to the specific characteristics of each local area.  \nWhile the International Energy Agency is promoting the term Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) and there is an extensive program of work under that name promoted by the European Commission\, there are many different ways that cities refer to the approach they are taking. \nThe workshop will feed into a Technology Report that the IEC System Committee Smart Cities is developing to describe the key characteristics of this approach so as to provide a common basis for cities to collaborate and learn from each other. In addition\, by raising the profile of this increasingly common approach by cities to tackle the climate crisis\, this will also alert specialist technical standards committees to the importance of this topic and support an ongoing collaborative approach to delivering the standards needed.  \nWe invite you to join us in fostering collaborative work on global standardization\, reflecting the experience and “first” lessons learned from existing projects. During the two days\, you will hear from PED projects from around the world and some key standards committees\, help identify the key characteristics of PEDs and use this to help develop a clear definition of the topic. You will also help us identify the key challenges cities face in implementing PEDs and what standards exist or could be developed to help. \nThe workshop will be of value to: \n\nParticipants in existing PED projects and those considering the development of such projects\nSolution providers that could provide products and services to help\nStandards development committees that are working in areas of relevance to PEDs\n\n \n FIND THE AGENDA AND REGISTRATION HERE

SUMMARY:European Week of Regions and Cities – Brussels (Belgium)\, 13-15 October 2025
DESCRIPTION:The European Week of Regions and Cities is the biggest annual Brussels-based event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs\, implement European Union Cohesion policy\, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance. The European Week of Regions and Cities is organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy and the European Committee of the Regions. \nThis edition will focus on three key thematic areas: \nCohesion and Growth for the Future  \nThe entire modernisation agenda can be tackled under this theme\, establishing a link between well-rooted cohesion policy\, values and new growth plans. This theme is linked to the political priorities of the EU\, particularly sustainable prosperity and competitiveness\, as well as delivering together and preparing our Union for the future. \nThe Right to Stay: unlocking the potential of every territory  \nAll citizens should have the right to stay in the place they call home. These sessions should be about how to support what a community needs\, so that people want to stay: public services and private activities\, education and skills\, health\, transport and digital connectivity.   \nCities building tomorrow  \nThis theme offers the opportunity to explore how to strengthen cities as engines for innovation\, growth and competitiveness\, and how to boost their resilience and sustainability.  \nThese sessions can exchange good practices\, tackle common challenges\, address new topics\, explore collaboration between cities within and across national borders\, and in this way help articulate a vision for the future of cities.  \n \n REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:IEC Webinar: Building people-centred cities with standards – Online\, 30 October 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cities are already home to more than half of the world’s population and this percentage is growing rapidly. As urbanization accelerates\, the challenge lies in making cities more resilient\, and sustainable\, while improving the quality of life for all residents. The United Nations’ World Cities Day emphasizes the importance of innovative solutions to address urban challenges\, and this year the focus is on people-centred smart cities showing how data\, technology\, and AI can enhance urban living\, support recovery from current challenges\, and advance initiatives that put people at the centre. \nTechnological innovation\, guided by international standards\, plays a crucial role in enabling smart and sustainable cities. From smart grids that ensure reliable and efficient energy distribution\, to IoT-enabled systems that enhance service delivery and urban mobility\, standards create the foundation for interoperability\, safety\, and trust. IEC and ISO International Standards in particular help integrate diverse technologies\, support scalable solutions\, and foster innovation that directly contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. \nThe challenge is to use these standards to design our cities around the needs of their diverse communities and ensure the best possible quality of life for everyone\, both for those alive today and for future generations. And how the use of standards-based innovative technologies such as digital twins and the CitiVerse can support participatory decision making\, where ordinary people can have an active role in ensuring that their cities work for them. \nThis IEC Academy webinar will showcase how international standards are shaping the future of urban living. Experts will highlight practical applications in energy\, resource management and participatory planning\, while sharing global case studies that illustrate successful strategies. They will also give an update on the Technology Report on Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) that the IEC System Committee Smart Cities has developed. Participants will gain insights into how standards drive collaboration\, innovation\, and efficiency\, empowering policymakers\, city planners\, and industry stakeholders to build cities around the needs of their residents\, that are not only smarter\, but also more sustainable\, inclusive and people-centred. \n \n REGISTER HERE
