SUMMARY:Releasing the Power of Procurement
DESCRIPTION:Releasing the Power of Procurement – Crossing the ‘Valley of Death’ Between Pilots and Large-Scale Deployment of IoT-Enabled Services \nPlease register here. \nIn the European Union\, public procurement accounts for 14% of GDP demonstrating the high potential of public procurement to support policy objectives\, to stimulate innovation and hence\, jobs and economic growth. \nBut current public procurement processes are struggling to keep up with the fast pace of digital innovation and data-driven solutions in key application domains such as smart cities & communities\, health-care and energy. As a result\, public administrations and their communities are not reaping the full potential of digital transformation through public procurement. \nPublic procurement as a tool has largely failed to help administrations and companies cross the ‘valley of death’ for digital and data-driven solutions between small-scale experimentation and real-life scale-up across Europe. The net result is a European digital transformation with brakes on due to the inadequate risk profiles along the innovation cycles. Strategic cooperation and interoperability between public administrations across Europe can help to lower the risks for first movers while helping SMEs to create scalable markets for innovative solutions across Europe. \nThis workshop aims to \n\nStimulate a debate on the benefits and shortcomings of public procurement processes and how to fix the shortcomings to benefit both public purchasers and the local innovation ecosystem.\nDiscuss the role of open standards for public administrations and the local innovation ecosystem for procuring digital\, IoT-enabled solutions\nExplore possible ways forward in deepening the European cooperation in procurement of innovative IoT solutions and services.\nShowcase innovative procurement methods from advanced sectors as well as domain frontrunners\n\nAgenda\n09:30 – 09:45 Welcome \n\nPeter Wintlev-Jensen\, Policy Officer\, IoT Unit\, DG Connect\, European Commission\nMartin Brynskov\, Chair\, OASC / Coordinator\, SynchroniCity & NGIoT\n\n09:45 – 10:00 Setting the Scene \n\nDavor Meersman\, CEO\, OASC\n\n10:00 – 12:00 Panel debate: How Can the Public Sector Foster Innovation? SUMMARY:Large-Scale IoT & Data Marketplaces
DESCRIPTION:Real-time data and real-time brokering of data transactions are becoming central in our increasingly data-driven societies\, linked to both economic\, social and environmental development. \nPlease register here. \n  \nBy 2025\, real-time data is projected to make up more than a quarter of all data being created\, and the vast majority will be IoT data (IDC\, 2018). This means that all sectors and all organisations need robust ways to share IoT data and orchestrate the services relying on them\, including AI-based analytics and blockchain/DLTs. \nAs we’re looking into a near future where infrastructure and value chains are increasingly linked to partnerships and ecosystems\, we see data spaces and data lakes with complex governance structures as the foundation for service delivery and meeting societal priorities. \nThis new situation must be met by similarly tuned transaction mechanisms. Whether monetised or not\, such transactions cannot happen without clear and transparent\, but also agile\, terms and conditions: service level agreements\, retention\, ownership etc. \nThe workshop will take its starting point in ecosystems where such transformative marketplaces\, or ecosystem transaction management mechanisms\, are already forming and being discussed. These include Smart Cities & Communities\, Food & Farming\, Healthcare and Automotive. \nPurpose \nThe purpose of the workshop is to bring key European stakeholders together to: \n\nDiscuss the value proposition of an ecosystem-based approach to transaction management related to IoT and data (data\, services\, components\, hardware and training)\, both monetised and non-monetised\,\nLearn from existing cases and implementations of IoT & data marketplaces and emerging needs\, including technical underpinnings and issues of governance in emerging infrastructure partnerships\,\nIdentify most promising paths to a sustainable scale-up of IoT & data marketplaces\, including key actors and instruments from both supply- and demand-side\, and taking into account the need to protect local priorities and critical infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Moving towards Smart Cities: Tackling Urban Challenges Using Technology-Based Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable development of urban areas is a key challenge. The on-going process of urbanisation is only expected to further increase in the future\, raising new environmental and human challenges. Currently\, 74% of the European Union’s population lives in cities\, as they constitute the main poles of human and economic activity (UN\, 2018). The large urban areas are hubs for innovation\, education and concentrate 53% of the EU GDP\, but remain centres of inequalities and greenhouse gas emissions (Eurostat 2016).
