SUMMARY:European Week of Regions and Cities 2019
DESCRIPTION:The European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual four-day event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs\, implement European Union cohesion policy\, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance. \nOASC is co-organising four official EU Regions Week sessions together with city and network partners: \n1) Scaling Urban Digital Solutions  \nWhen: Thursday\, 10 October 2019\, 11:30 to 13:00 \nDescription:\nCities and communities in the 21st century are facing common challenges ranging from air pollution to waste management and urban mobility. Data-driven and IoT-enabled urban services can be a solution to these common challenges\, but a major challenge is the scale-up of locally developed services to replicate successful solutions with similar challenges in other cities and communities.  \nThis session co-organised by ENoLL and OASC\, brings together cities and experts who are reducing these market barriers through the SynchroniCity project. In an open and collaborative environment\, participants will hear best practices from frontrunner cities and will discuss: \n\nthe benefits of an active innovation ecosystem for cities & communities\nhow to stimulate such an ecosystem\nwhy city networking in the digital transformation is crucial\nthe role open standards for digital interoperability and procurement of digital services.\nhow to move towards a digital single market for cities and communities.\n\nClick here to register for this interactive workshop. \n  \n2) Digital Innovation in Urban Environments  \nWhen: Tuesday\, 8 October 2019\, 16:30 to 19:00 \nDescription:\nThis workshop will explore how cities can transform into platforms of innovation by utilising digital solutions. The workshop will showcase the effects of technological transformation in European cities\, propose policy priorities and pave the way for the future strategies. The workshop is aimed at contributing to the discussions of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2019\, based on key insights from the ESPON Programme\, the Urban Partnership on Digital Transition\, the Open & Agile Smart Cities network and the European Commission. \nClick here to register for this session. \n  \n3) Boosting the upscale of Digital Solutions\, \nWhen: Wednesday\, 9 October 2019\, 11:30 to 13:00 \nDescription:\nRegions and cities have a key role to play in providing answers to our major societal challenges\, in areas such as mobility\, energy\, social inclusion\, etc. Digital solutions play a growing role in the answers to provide. On all levels of public authorities\, from local to European\, significant levels of funding are allocated to the development\, testing and implementation of digital solutions. \nThe overall objective of the workshop is to dive into the contributions delivered by both the Umbria (IT) and Brainport Eindhoven (NL) regions\, and connect them to the efforts currently being elaborated between European cities and regions\, Member States and the European Commission to ensure local successes can be of benefit of all European citizens\, while further stimulating the digital economy. Umbria and Brainport Eindhoven will build a bridge from the present practices to the future\, in order to support the digital transition process.  \nIn particular the Umbria Region will speak about DigiPASS\, financed by ERDF. DigiPASS are open public areas\, with free access where citizens find experts able to help people and businesses in the use of digital services. Brainport Eindhoven will explain how it is committed\, in collaboration with European networks such as EUROCITIES\, ENoLL and OASC\, to reach a new level of EU-wide innovation and collaboration and prepare the ground – also on a technical level through interoperable urban platforms promoting open standards\, open APIs\, and shared data models – for a citizen-driven and city-led digital societal transformation. During the workshop the consortium will inform the audience on the initiative\, share the progress of the activities developed and invite to join thereby enlarging ownership. \nClick here to register here for this session. \n  \n4) Societal challenges in smart cities: towards a more ethical smart city \nWhen: Thursday\, 10 October\, 09:15 – 10:45 \nDescription:\nWhile the narrative of digital technologies to enable smart cities and communities has initially be a positive one\, in recent years concerns have been voiced: With everything and everyone being connected for the sake of efficiency\, where does this leave the citizens\, what about their digital footprint and the big data to which they contribute in their everyday life? What is their role in the creation of smart cities & communities? How can cities reassure citizens? How can cities make sure that more ethics is embedded in the digital value chain of smart cities\, from digital equipment production to day-to-day digital services consumption? Will digital apps save democracy or kill it? \nFour European cities – Tallinn\, Lille Metropole\, Espoo and Brussels Capital Region – will share their experiences in digitalising their public services for a better living experience for their citizens. \n\nLille Metropole\, world design capital 2020\, will present the connected social centres it supported through a large programme aiming at developing third places and giving easier access to digital services for all.    \nTallinn\, European capital of e-administration will demonstrate how open cooperation can help the cities to innovate.\nEspoo will showcase how its citizens are involved in designing the most sustainable city in Europe\nBrussels Capital Region will present some of its smart cities and digital inclusion projects.\n\nThe European Commission\, DG Connect\, will give its vision of a smarter living regarding these societal challenges. \nClick here to register here for this session.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Upcoming Funding Opportunities for Smart Cities
DESCRIPTION:OASC and the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) are organising a joint webinar to give an overview of the opportunities for European cities & communities to implement so-called digital Building Blocks. The webinar\, which takes place on 5 July 2019\, will particularly focus on the Context Broker and Big Data Test Infrastructure Building Blocks. \nIn a dedicated webinar for the members of Open & Agile Smart Cities\, participants will get an overview of the CEF Digital Building Blocks and how cities can use the building blocks to deliver improved public services\, to manage data more efficiently\, and to support policy-making through better data. A particular focus will be the upcoming funding opportunities to implement two of the CEF Building Blocks. \n  \nPlease register here. \n  \n \nThe CEF Context Broker is compatible with OASC Minimal Interoperability Mechanism 1 “Context Information Management”. \nThe CEF Context Broker enables organisations (including but not limited to public administrations) to manage and share data in real-time describing “what is currently happening” within their organisations\, in the real world they manage or where they run their daily business processes. Thus\, for example\, Smart Cities can share information about what is happening in streets (e.g.\, traffic status\, quality of air data\, available parking slots\, location).  Similarly\, a packet delivery service company may share data about orders (e.g.\, current location and expected delivery time). This information describing what is currently happening is referred as “context information”. \nThe CEF Context Broker provides the FIWARE NGSI API\, which is a RESTful API enabling applications to provide updates and get access to context information. \nFor more information visit the CEF website. \n  \nCEF Big Data Test Infrastructure (BDTI) provides a set of data and analytics services from infrastructure to tools and advisory\, allowing European organisations to experiment with Big Data technologies and move towards a data-driven policy making. \nBDTI offers tools and technologies to support the different elements of data processing\, from data collection to data ingestion and transformation for processing\, analysis\, exploration and visualisation. These can be reused on a pick-and-choose basis through ready-to-use environment templates. \nFor more information visit the CEF website

SUMMARY:Service Design for the Post-anthropocentric City
DESCRIPTION:“Ubiquitous computing\, mobile devices\, and big data come together to give rise to a new urban paradigm being celebrated by many technology corporations and municipalities alike: the smart city.” \n\n\n\nThe smart city agenda is only now starting to slowly move beyond the technology and data hype and come to terms with issues of housing affordability\, digital inclusion\, social justice. \nWith society’s current limited perspective that centres around humans\, we risk to forget how we are entangled with and connected to other living beings\, the environment\, and the wider ecosystem that keeps us alive. Can we reconceptualise the smart city as a place where people and place meet to make a net positive contribution to the world?” (Marcus Foth – Connected Urbanism and Cohabitation in the Smart City) \nAs governments and big tech companies are going to spends tons of money on amazing technology like IOT\, AR\, VR\, AI\, etc. to power up cities in order to make it an artificial organism that crunch data and take actions\, it’s easy to forget or to keep humans outside of the pictures. In this scenario\, it would be easy to quickly resort to human-centered designas a way to put people’s need back at the center as opposed to the servant technology. \nBut when it comes to city there’s so much more to take into account than the relationship between people and technology as cities exists on a wider and more complex scale and a broader ecosystem has to be taken into account. \nFor the first time\, Service Design Drinks Milan will host a visiting professor from the other side of the world: Marcus Foth\, professor of Urban Informatics at Queensland University of Technology of Brisbane will present his speech about Connected Urbanism and Cohabitation in the Smart City\, supported by Stefano Maffei\, full professor from School of Design of Politecnico di Milano and director of Polifactory. \nThe event will be held in English. Space is limited so to make sure to have a seat please arrive according to time. \n\nPlease register here. \n\n

More so since each European city operates in a unique context\, gathering data from different sources\, in different ways. \nThe Connecting Europe Facility offers the Context Broker building block\, which centralises\, contextualises and gives meaning to collected data. This enables people like you\, from the public administration or private sector\, to access data that is already filtered\, organised and labeled so that you could leverage on it and create smart applications. Furthermore\, the Context Broker is built on common European standards making it interoperable and sustainable. \nIf you want to extend your know-how on how you can manage your context information\, join our set of trainings and learn how to integrate the Context Broker services and knowledge into your IT department. \nRegister now for the upcoming webinars! \nContext Broker. Empowering smart innovation.
