SUMMARY:Digital Cities Challenge Conference: A Strategy for EU Cities in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:A high-level conference which will present the latest trends in urban area planning in Europe\, provide information on how advanced technologies can transform cities into catalysts of smart and sustainable growth and lead the way for Intelligent Cities in the 21st century. \nPlease register here. \n  \nCities host 72% of the EU population and are Europe’s economic engine\, contributing to two thirds of its GDP.  As centres of economic activity\, employment and innovation\, cities have a vital role to play when it comes to promoting smart\, sustainable and inclusive growth and tackling economic\, environmental and social challenges. \nThe revolutionary potential of emerging technologies\, such as Artificial Intelligence\, data analytics\, Internet of Things\, blockchain offers to cities unprecedented opportunities for innovative business models\, new market creation and addressing societal challenges\, climate change\, resource efficiency and a circular economy. \nThe European Commission with the Digital Cities Challenge initiative is helping over 40 European cities to reap the benefits of advanced technologies\, develop comprehensive strategies and thriving ecosystems and achieve smart and sustainable growth. Launched in October 2017\, the initiative offers policy advisory services\, mentoring and coaching opportunities\, while the cities share a network of collaboration\, knowledge sharing and peer learning. \nThe technological\, social\, and economic effects of emerging technologies\, such as Artificial Intelligence\, data analytics\, Internet of Things\, blockchain are rapidly changing the world around us. Nowhere is this more evident than in cities – where the density and diversity of human settlement creates innovation-friendly ecosystems that promote smart\, sustainable and inclusive growth. City leadership must be aware and empowered to direct such transformation for the long term benefit of citizens. The European Commission’s Digital Cities Challenge initiative drives urban and industrial transformation in 40 European cities and helps them achieve smart and sustainable growth\, through four pillars: demonstrating visionary leadership\, building thriving local innovation ecosystems\, creating new markets based on smart infrastructures\, advanced technologies and data and upskilling the city. The initiative offers policy advisory services and coaching opportunities and provides cities with tools and best practices both for assessing current city readiness and moving forward their vision for the future. The cities share a network of collaboration\, knowledge sharing and peer learning. \nObjectives of the conference: \nThe high-level conference will showcase the effects of technological transformation in European cities and will seek to agree on policy priorities and pave the way for the future strategy for Intelligent Cities in the 21st century. \nIt will discuss the following thematic priorities: \n\nSetting ambitious vision and creating modern\, sustainable city-ecosystems for transformation of their territories\nShaping the cities of the future\, by promoting innovation in policy\, decisions that are made on sound EU values as well as robust data\, by investing in high-tech infrastructure\, technology and open data and piloting the next generation of technological solutions\nUpskilling the cities through disruptive education and training\, as an essential condition for the industrial modernisation and digital transformation of a territory.\n\nOver 400 participants are expected including high level speakers\, such as: \n\nPolicy makers\nIndustry and business leaders\, clusters and associations\nRepresentatives of international organisations (UN\, WEF\, OECD\, etc)\nAcademics\, digital transformation and smart city experts\, representatives of think tanks\, training experts

SUMMARY:Context Broker Webinar 2: Using the sandbox to experiment with Context Broker
DESCRIPTION:Agenda of the training \n\nSetting-up your own environment in the sandbox\nUsing the sandbox to experiment with Context Broker\nAdvantages of using Context Broker\nQ&A\n\nPlease Register here.     \n(the same webinar will also be held on 18th September 2019\, 15:00 – 16:00 and 27th February 2020\, 15:00 – 16:00. Please register through the same link.) \nWe recommend a general programming knowledge (Docker Compose\, Git\, Postman\, Cygwin\, Compass) \n  \nLearn how to integrate near real-time data through CEF Context Broker trainings\n \nThe European Commission understands that making sense of data and connecting the dots is not easy. More so since each European city operates in a unique context\, gathering data from different sources\, in different ways. \nThe Connecting Europe Facility offers the Context Broker building block\, which centralises\, contextualises and gives meaning to collected data. This enables people like you\, from the public administration or private sector\, to access data that is already filtered\, organised and labeled so that you could leverage on it and create smart applications. Furthermore\, the Context Broker is built on common European standards making it interoperable and sustainable. \nIf you want to extend your know-how on how you can manage your context information\, join our set of trainings and learn how to integrate the Context Broker services and knowledge into your IT department. \nRegister now for the upcoming webinars! \nContext Broker. Empowering smart innovation.

SUMMARY:Service Design for the Post-anthropocentric City
DESCRIPTION:“Ubiquitous computing\, mobile devices\, and big data come together to give rise to a new urban paradigm being celebrated by many technology corporations and municipalities alike: the smart city.” \n\n\n\nThe smart city agenda is only now starting to slowly move beyond the technology and data hype and come to terms with issues of housing affordability\, digital inclusion\, social justice. \nWith society’s current limited perspective that centres around humans\, we risk to forget how we are entangled with and connected to other living beings\, the environment\, and the wider ecosystem that keeps us alive. Can we reconceptualise the smart city as a place where people and place meet to make a net positive contribution to the world?” (Marcus Foth – Connected Urbanism and Cohabitation in the Smart City) \nAs governments and big tech companies are going to spends tons of money on amazing technology like IOT\, AR\, VR\, AI\, etc. to power up cities in order to make it an artificial organism that crunch data and take actions\, it’s easy to forget or to keep humans outside of the pictures. In this scenario\, it would be easy to quickly resort to human-centered designas a way to put people’s need back at the center as opposed to the servant technology. \nBut when it comes to city there’s so much more to take into account than the relationship between people and technology as cities exists on a wider and more complex scale and a broader ecosystem has to be taken into account. \nFor the first time\, Service Design Drinks Milan will host a visiting professor from the other side of the world: Marcus Foth\, professor of Urban Informatics at Queensland University of Technology of Brisbane will present his speech about Connected Urbanism and Cohabitation in the Smart City\, supported by Stefano Maffei\, full professor from School of Design of Politecnico di Milano and director of Polifactory. \nThe event will be held in English. Space is limited so to make sure to have a seat please arrive according to time. \n\nPlease register here. \n\n
